Intangible Cultural Heritage Weaves New Opportunities: Tujia Brocade Revival in Zhangjiajie
In the scenic mountains of Zhangjiajie, Hunan Province, an ancient craft is experiencing a modern renaissance. Tujia brocade weaving, recognized as a national-level intangible cultural heritage, is being transformed from a traditional art into a vibrant source of employment, cultural tourism, and international exports.
At the heart of this revival is the Guaiyaomei Tujia Brocade Art Museum and Zhangjiajie Guaiyaomei Tujia Brocade Development Co., Ltd.. The company has innovated over 600 product varieties inspired by classic Tujia patterns—ranging from fashionable clothing, handbags, and scarves to home décor items—often incorporating unique local herbal tea dyeing techniques.
In 2025 alone, the enterprise achieved an annual output value surpassing 90 million yuan (approximately $12.96 million USD), with products exported to more than 30 countries and regions worldwide.
Empowering Local Women & Families
The initiative prioritizes flexible employment for rural women. With supportive policies like adjustable working hours and on-site childcare, the company now employs over 700 local women. Many families see additional annual income in the tens of thousands of yuan. Weaver Tian Tao, for example, earns about 6,000 to 7,000 yuan per month, allowing her to support her family while staying close to home.
Education, Youth Engagement & Tourism Experiences
To ensure the craft’s long-term survival, the company partnered with a local tourism vocational school in 2025 to integrate Tujia brocade weaving into the curriculum, training more than 100 students in foundational skills. Recognized inheritor Zhang Tiantian leads classes, describing the intricate brocade as the Tujia people’s “living written script” and “wordless history book”—each elaborate pattern can take over a month to complete.
Hands-on workshops and study tours at the museum draw younger domestic visitors and cultural enthusiasts, blending education with immersive tourism. These experiences help bridge generations and introduce the heritage to new audiences.
Sustainable Future & Global Ambitions
By fusing intangible cultural heritage with modern design, technology, and tourism, Zhangjiajie is creating a sustainable model for preservation. Future goals include scaling up production facilities, constructing standardized workshops, and partnering with international designers to expand global appeal.
This approach moves Tujia brocade beyond museum exhibits into everyday life and commerce—ensuring the craft thrives while boosting rural economies and cultural pride in one of China’s most iconic destinations.
