Zhangjiajie Welcomes Nearly 500,000 Visitors During 2026 Spring Festival Holiday – Inbound Tourism Shines Bright!
As the extended 2026 Spring Festival (Chinese New Year) holiday wrapped up, Zhangjiajie’s iconic landscapes drew massive crowds. According to data released by the Zhangjiajie Municipal Bureau of Culture, Tourism, Radio, Television and Sports, the city’s three flagship scenic areas—Wulingyuan (home to the Avatar-inspired peaks), Tianmen Mountain (with its thrilling glass skywalk and Heaven’s Gate Cave), and Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon (famous for the world’s highest glass bridge)—collectively received 492,900 ticketed visitors as of February 23 at noon, marking a solid 14.37% increase year-on-year.
Inbound international tourism also performed strongly, with 9,134 overseas visitors recorded—a 20.07% rise compared to the previous year.
Themed Around Nature + Authentic Chinese New Year
This year’s holiday focused on “admiring奇秀山水 and savoring genuine folk New Year traditions.” The city integrated Tujia ethnic customs, vibrant intangible heritage performances, and extended night tours across Wulingyuan, Tianmen Mountain, and Grand Canyon, creating immersive, round-the-clock cultural experiences. These efforts not only delighted domestic travelers but also positioned Zhangjiajie as a prime spot for foreigners to “experience a real Chinese New Year.”
Qixing Mountain Steals the Spotlight
Among standout performers, the niche Qixing Mountain scenic area achieved explosive growth of 93.99% year-on-year, making it the fastest-rising attraction in Zhangjiajie.
Visa-Free Policies Fuel Inbound Boom
Leveraging expanded visa-free entry advantages, Zhangjiajie enhanced services with multilingual guides, personalized VIP routes, and tailored experiences. This drew tourists from emerging markets including Russia, Spain, France, the United States, and more. One Thai visitor, Arin, shared: “Seeing the stunning peaks while celebrating Chinese New Year was so meaningful!” International guests joined locals in tasting Tujia festive foods, watching non-heritage shows, and mingling—helping make “International Zhangjiajie” more vibrant and approachable.
Self-Drive & Independent Travel Dominate
Domestic visitors praised the ease of travel. A Wuhan self-driver, Li Siyuan, noted: “Family road trip—parking and bookings were super convenient; we felt totally relaxed.” Independent travelers led the way, with Tianmen Mountain recording 64% solo/independent visitors. To cater to this trend, the city rolled out visitor-friendly (“宠客”) initiatives:
- Free parking at party/government offices and hotels
- Lenient, cautious enforcement for minor traffic violations by out-of-province drivers
- Easy online mini-program for reservations, changes, and refunds
- On-site volunteers for guidance and assistance
These measures significantly boosted satisfaction and smoothed the visitor flow.
With its world-famous Avatar mountains, glass skywalks, glass bridges, and rich ethnic culture, Zhangjiajie continues to shine as a top destination—especially during peak holidays. Whether you’re chasing natural wonders or cultural immersion, 2026 proved the magic is stronger than ever!
